Dimaag ka 'Bell Bajao'

Was walking down the Barakhamba Road, in Delhi one evening after college with friends and I heard voices of someone screaming and yelling. I followed the noise and discovered a drunk man beating his wife and abusing her. He was holding a broken glass bottle. I looked around in helplessness to call a cop but couldn't find one. There were a lot of people around though, watching from a distance, acting too busy to stop the man. At first I felt scared to intervene, that man was not in his right senses, and might have attacked me too. But after a few seconds, I gathered courage and intervened. At first I sternly asked him to stop and then politely reiterated not to do that and indicated his wife to slip out of teh situation. I think domestic violence is a matter of public shame and needs to be stopped immediately. I feel happy that I made a move and left an example for other busy people to follow. Sharing this story was more important to me than winning anything. Worst part? A man wearing some nice formal clothes came up to me and told me, "Beta jaane do inhe, inka roz ka hai" (Let them be, its their routine behavior). Good lord! What's wrong with people? This story needs to be told to let people know that it is definitely their responsibility to intervene in any situation that leads to the humiliation of our whole society, not one person.
